J/109 Zelda claims victory in Inshore and Full McGuigan Wines Double Handed Series

The 2009 McGuigan Wines Double Handed Series run by Royal Southampton Yacht Club concluded on Saturday 10 October when the Autumn Solent Double was held in the central Solent in sunshine and 12 knots.  This double-handed series has increased in popularity in recent years with 80+ boats regularly participating.

The Inshore Sub-Series comprises four races – Spring Solent, Round the Island Double, Nab Double and the Autumn Solent, whilst the Full Series allows two discards and in addition to the Inshore Series includes races to Weymouth and back, Cherbourg and Brixham. 

In 2009 one boat has dominated both the sub and full series to secure convincing victories.  J/109 Zelda (Ben Richards/Michael Ewart-Smith) finished 2nd in the final race of the series to Hod 35 Malice (Mike Moxley), to secure the Inshore Sub-Series by 6 points and the Full Series by 8 points from Elaine (Mike Bridges), after discarding their worst results in the race to Cherbourg (10th) and the Nab Double (8th).
